World water day: Kaduna state government achieves 96% coverage on SHAWN

The Kaduna state government has achieved 96 % coverage on Sanitation, Hygiene and Water in Nigeria (SHAWN ) in rural communities under a tripartite funded collaboration between the state government and donor partners, says the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Water Resources in Kaduna, Mr Stephen Joseph.








He made the revelation during a press briefing to commemorate the World Water Day in Kaduna.
The occasion which has a theme ” leaving no one behind ” is organized yearly to find a way of tackling water crisis worldwide.
Mr Joseph said that ” there is an ongoing tripartite funded collaboration between the state and donors (UNICEF/DFID) under sanitation, hygiene and water in Nigeria in rural communities.”
“The project started with three pilot local governments areas but today we are proud to announce that 22 local governments areas (96%) of the state are covered with the projects.”
He further said that the state government is committed to the of such projects adding that modest achievements have been recorded through the construction of 870 gender sensitive ventilated latrines.
He also said that 86 solar powered boreholes as well as 986 hand pumps boreholes had been constructed just as 700 dysfunctional water facilities in communities, schools, primary healthcare centers and markets had been repaired.
“Just yesterday (March 21,2019) another contract agreement was signed with 256 firms to deliver 44 number solar motorized schemes, 1,140 hand pump boreholes, 384 blocks of three compartment gender sensitive latrines and 96 blocks another blocks of two compartments gender sensitive VIP latrines all to be provided in our rural schools, primary healthcare centers across the SHAWN local governments areas of the state,” he further added.
On other achievements recorded by the state government, Mr Joseph said that the Zaria water supply expansion and sanitation project financed by the Federal Government, Kaduna state government, Africa Development Bank and Islamic Development bank is now 100% completed and is awaiting commission.
While contracts have been awarded for the rehabilitation and expansion of water supply in urban centres of Kaduna metropolis,Kafanchan, Birnin Gwari, Saminaka, Manchok/Zonkwa and Ikara which is solely financed by the state government.
He finally said that the Itisi Dam project in Kagarko local government which will take three to four years to complete has the capacity to serve as a multipurpose dam as it will go along way in augmenting any shortage.
