WhatsApp restricts users to forward only 5 messages to tackle rumours

WhatsApp is placing a worldwide limit of the number of times a user can forward a message to five time only, which is to commence on Monday, the famous messaging platform aim is to tackle “misinformation and rumours”, company executives stated on Monday.

Before now, a WhatsApp user could forward a message to 20 persons or even groups.

The limit to five is in expansion of a measure WhatsApp earlier put in place in India in July after the spread of rumours on social media led to the killings and lynching attempts.

“As of today, we are imposing a limit of five messages all over the world, Victoria Grand, who is the Vice President for Policy and Communications at WhatsApp, made this known during an event in the Indonesian capital.

WhatApp which at the moment has over 1.5 billion users, has been finding ways to put a stop in the misuse of the app.

This came after a global concern was made that the messaging platform is being used to spread fake news, manipulated photos, videos without context, and audio hoaxes, with no way to monitor their origin or full reach.

WhatsApp will be rolling out an update so as to activate the new forward limit, which is set to commence on Monday, WhatsApp’s head of communications Carl Woog stated.

Users of devices which are running Google’s Android system will first receive the update, which will follow by the users of Apple Inc’s (AAPL.O) iOS.
