25 women has been trained by the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) on how to produce reusable sanitary pads to improve women and girls’ health in Malumfashi Local Council in Katsina State.

A Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Officer, Job Ominyi, made this known on the sidelines of a Training of Trainers workshop on Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) in Makurdi on Tuesday.

He stated that all these became very necessary after the result of the research carried out among among the three major ethnic groups and realising that there was poor knowledge, attitude and practice on MHM in parts of the country.

He said that the outcome indicates that a huge number of women and girls does not have proper information and WASH resources to support hygiene management, stating that the taboos and myths still played a major role.

He also stated that there were serious problems of poor information on disposal of menstrual waste and the unavailability of absorbent materials to manage menstruation, and this interventions could be achieved in schools and communities.
