Ramadan: American Ambassador tasks Nigerians on Peace, Oneness

Stuart Symington, the U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, has urged Nigerians to take advantage of the Ramadan Period to build peace and unity amongst each other irrespective of religious or ethnic affiliation.

The Ambassador made this known on Tuesday evening in Abuja at the breaking of fast (Iftar) and feeding of indigent Muslims by Al-Habibiyyah Islamic Society.

He made it clear that Nigeria is a great country that needs to take advantage of its diversity as a strength and not a hindrance.

He stressed that for the country to achieve socio-economic development and prosperity, there is every need for peace, unity and religious tolerance among all Nigerians.

“Before now in Nigera, we had people of about 500 languages, with different faiths all living together in peace, that is not the case right now from the senseless violence, blasphemy and deaths now,” he said.

He praised the Al-Habibiyyah for the feeding programme which is at the moment catering for both Muslims and Christians and urged other organizations to emulate them.

“It is very important to go back to those times when you celebrate both Sallah and Christmas, Easter and Ramadan together and above all share the language of God that says love and care,” he stated.

He also went on to advice Nigerians and religious leaders not to cover for those who hide under the umbrella to perpetuate violence and kill innocent people.

Earlier, Adeyemi Fuad, who is the National Chief Imam of Al-Habibiyyah Mosque, stated that over 1000 less privileged Muslims and people of other faith are fed daily throughout the time of Ramadan.

He made it known that the programme was part of the Al-Habibiyyah Food Bank programme which was organized to help the less privilege and foster unity among Nigerians.

A cardinal, John Onaiyekan in his remarks praised the initiative of feeding the less privilege and called for peace and unity among Nigerians.
