Opposition Party Leading In 4 Out Of 5 States Where Elections Were Declared Inconclusive
Out the five state where elections were declared as inconclusive by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is ahead in four states.
According to results collated and released by INEC, PDP governorship candidates are leading in Benue,Sokoto,Kano and Bauchi States .
In Benue, according to the Returning Officer, Governor Samuel Ortom of the PDP polled a total of 410,576 votes while his closest rival, Mr Emmanuel Jime of the All Progressives Congress (APC) polled 329,022 votes
While the PDP leads in Benue, in Plateau,the incumbent governor and candidate of the APC leads.
Governor Simon Lalong polled 583,255 while his opponent, Jeremiah Useni, polled 538,326, thereby beating the PDP candidate marginally.
Contrary to the Presidential poll where voters voted overwhelming for the APC and its candidate President Muhammad Buhari, Abba Kabir Yusuf, the PDP governorship candidate had more votes than the incumbent state governor Dr Abdullahi Ganduje of the APC with a slim margin getting 1,014,474 votes, while Ganduje got 987,810, making a difference margin of 26,655 votes.
Aminu Tambuwal of the PDP governorship candidate in Sokoto has a big fight on his hands even as his fate hangs in the balance.
The incumbent Governor just managed to secure a mere three thousand votes to stay ahead of his APC rival.
According to figures released by the electoral umpire:
Aminu Tambuwal PDP polled 489,558 votes
Ahmed Aliyu APC: 486,145 votes
Margin of Winning 3,413
Cancellation in 136 polling units with 75,403 registered voters.
- The Returning Officer in Bauchi governorship poll, Prof. Mohammed Kyari ,declared that the election in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of the state was inconclusive .
According to him , the PDP candidate, Senator Bala Mohammed, got 469, 512 votes to defeat his closest rival , the incumbent governor, Mohammed Abubabakar of the APC, who got 465, 453 votes .
He added that the margin between the two candidates were 4, 059 votes, having cancelled the votes of Tafawa Balewa LG which had been 139, 240.
Kyari further explained that the number of cancelled votes in the elections , even without that of Tafawa Balewa LGA , was 45, 312 and had declared: “ I , therefore , based on Section 26 ( 53) of the Electoral Act , declare the elections in Bauchi State as inconclusive. ”
Political analysts have said that the 2019 election recorded the highest number of inconclusive elections in the history of Nigeria.
The further pointed out that it is not a good sign for democracy that in cases where election results favoured the opposition party ,the elections were declared as inconclusive.
