The Nigerian Senate has approved that the National Minimum Wage would be thirty thousand Naira (N30, 000).

According to Senator Shehu Sani, the agreement was reached by the Senate Committee on New Minimum Wage.

The lawmaker via a tweet on Thursday stated that, “The committee on the New National Minimum wage met yesterday and made an approval of the new national minimum wage bill; 30k as minimum wage and 75k as penalty for non-compliance.”

On Tuesday, Sen. Francis Alimikhena, who is the Senate Deputy Majority Whip, was appointed by the senate as acting chairman of the ad-hoc Committee on Minimum Wage.

An announcement was made by the President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, on Tuesday that Alimikhena would work in an acting capacity while the Chairman, Sen. Olusola Adeyeye, was away due to health issues.

The senate president urged the committee to quickly act on the matter so as to help the Senate catch up with the House of Representatives which had already passed the bill.
