Nigeria may commence Rice Exportation in Two Years – Minister

Nigeria may soon commence the exportation of rice in two years’ time, Sabo Nanono, who is the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, has stated.

The minister made this known during a press conference after a visit by Nestle Nigeria, in Lagos, on Tuesday.

With the new and improved rate of production, rice made in Nigeria will soon be exported. Before our border was shut, most of these rice milling plants were not fully operational, but at the moment, they are not only operating to full capacity but are also expanding,” the statement said.

If we continue at this rate for the next two years, we may be exporting rice to other countries, he stated.

The closure of Nigeria’s border has reduced the prevalence of foreign rice in the Nigerian Markets.

As we speak today, there are 11 milling plants with the capacity to produce between 180 tonnes to 350 tonnes of rice per day,” the statement made clear.

He further added that the local rice farmers have so far been engaged and are making use of between 200 and 300 farm lands directly.
