New minimum wage: NLC praises Senate for finally approving N30, 000 for workers

On Tuesday, the Nigeria Labour Congress, has given their reactions as the Nigeria Senate finally approves the new minimum wage for workers.

The union urged the government to begin the implementation process of the new national minimum wage before the 2019 Workers Day celebration, following approval by the Senate.

Comrade Najeem Yasin, who is the Acting President of the NLC, praised the senate for passing the bill into law, following what the House of Representatives did when they earlier passed the N30, 000 as new national minimum wage.

The Nigeria workers will not relent until the bill is signed and implemented, he said.

He said, “We want to commend the senate for a speedy passage. But it is not yet done because we want demand that the process sees a logical conclusion and for the quick implementation of that N30, 000.

“We strongly stand by the punishment of N75, 000 for employers who fail to implement the law which has been passed. For a very long time, we have been fighting for this N30, 000 minimum wage and the state governors have been opposed to it. It has now been passed. The Nigerian workers are now looking forward to the signing of the bill into law.

“We want all concerned parties to implement it before the celebration of May Day, so that all Nigerian Workers can have a very good reason to really celebrate.”
