Maternal, Newborn, Child Health Week commence May 27th in Kaduna

On Friday, the Ministry of Health and Human Services Kaduna State, stated that it had finalized plans for the conduct of maternal Newborn and Child health week on May 27.

Dr Paul Dogo, who is the state Commissioner for Health, made this known during a news conference held in Kaduna, stating that the celebration of the week would be in collaboration with development partners through the Primary Healthcare Development Agency.

According to the Commissioner, the week is scheduled to hold from May 27 to May 31 and that interventions will be provided in 1, 212 health facilities in the 23 LGAs of the state.

“This is surely an improvement from the last implementation which covered only 510 health facilities.

“The adoption and implementation of the MNCH week is to take care of and address the high maternal, newborn and child mortality rates, and improve the nutrition status of the pregnant women and children,’’ he stated.

The week would also feature counselling and testing for HIV/Aids to tackle mother to child transmission of HIV.

The Commissioner went on to urge parents, pregnant women, caregivers to make good use of the week to uptake the interventions with a view to achieving excellent health for women and children.

He also tasked traditional rulers, religious leaders and stakeholders to help in educating their followers on the importance of the week so as to achieve the desire result.
