Man Jumps into River, Drowns while Hiding From Policemen.
In Oniyanrin town in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, a 31-year-old man named Gafar Ajibola jumped into a river as he was trying to escape from some policemen during a raid in the community.
According to our source, the victim was at the river bank washing his clothes, when he heard several gunshots from policemen, who were said to be raiding the community.
Out of fear, it was reported that the victim jumped into the river.
The police during the early hours of Saturday entered the Oniyanrin community close to Agbeloba in Abeokuta, so as get rid of some criminal hideouts.
Mr Abimbola Oyeyemi, who is the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, made a confirmation of the incident, and also stated that the police were carrying out their constitutional duties, which was chasing hoodlums and never the deceased.
According to the PPRO, “The information that was given to me as regards to the incident was that the policemen had gone to raid hideouts of criminals. There are places around that environment which are famously known for harboring criminals. So the police go there to raid from time to time.
“After investigations were carried out, some persons were arrested, and they were also released… I am very surprised that somebody jumped into the river when the police were carrying out there duties.
“At the moment the case is still under investigation, but the police were there so as to secure lives and properties in the area.
Ahmed Iliyasu, the commissioner of police have given orders that an investigation should be carried out.
I am giving you full assurances that if the police officers are found guilty, the law will surely be unleashed on them. But the police are there to carry out their duties.”
