Lawyer sues Lagos Government over ban on Keke and Okada

Tope Akinyode, who is a Lagos-based lawyer, has sued the Government of Lagos State, over the ban on commercial tricycles (keke) and motorcycles (okada) in some parts of the state.

The State Government stated that the ban became necessary due to security and safety. So far, the ban has constantly generated conflict since February 1st.

On Wednesay, a schoolgirl was hit by a stray bullet at Iyana Ipaja during a violent clash between a mob, protesting the ban and security officials.

The girl whose name has not been known as at the time of filing this report was quickly rushed to Peak Hospital where she was stabilized before taken to the General Hospital, Orile Agege for treatment.

More than 60 BRT buses have so far been deployed by the state government so as to cushion the effects of the ban on commuters.

Mr Akinyode, On Wednesday sued the state government on what he tagged as pure abuse of fundamental human rights.

He stated that by law: “Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018”, “Lagosians have been thrown into tremendous distress because the law which is being enforced places a ban on Tricycles and Motorcycles which are widely used by Lagosians as major means of transportation.”

The lawsuit is yet to be assigned to a judge or a date for the hearing given.
