KADUNA: The major threats that would face 2019 elections – Lai Mohammed reveals

On Thursday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, stated the biggest threat to the 2019 general elections.

The Minister spoke about this while he made a visit to Kaduna at the 47th Meeting of the National Council on Information, with the theme, “Fighting Fake News and Hate Speech to Enhance National Unity”, stating that if fake news and hate speech is left unchecked, it’ll be a big threat to the 2019 elections.

Mohammed stated that with the 2019 elections drawing close with just 2 months away, the issue of fake news and hate speech needs to be tackled.

The entire course of the election can be altered by fake news, which could trigger legitimacy problem for the winner and the menace transcended political party lines, religion, ethnicity, and even on a national level.

The minister alleged that the opposition is constantly using fake news to paint the president and his administration to what they are not.

In Nigeria, it would be recalled when a recent report by the BBC, stating that fake news going round in the social media is seriously fueling the farmers-herders crisis in Nigeria, with so many unpleasant photos circulated through Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter, purportedly being from the killings in Jos or Benue,” he said.

He praised the media, alongside some government agencies and civil society organizations which had brought together workshops and conferences to enlighten the nation to the topical issue.
