Kaduna govt establishes Sexual Assault Referral Centre in Kafanchan

The government of Kaduna State has established a Sexual Assault Referral Centre, which is the first of its kind, in Southern Kaduna.

Mr Chris Umar, who is the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice Kaduna State, while speaking at the inauguration ceremony held at Sir Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa Memorial Hospital, Kafanchan, lamented the high occurring rates of incidences of sexual violence such as rape and assault have in the communities, with mostly children as the victims.

He made it clear that these actions carries legal consequences but are either unreported or under reported and, therefore, are not prosecuted.

“It is so unfortunate that the society has failed to support victims of such cases. They are rather subjected to discrimination, blame and fear.”

He thanked the Kaduna State government for providing some Sexual Assault Referral Centres across the State to provide immediate support to victims.

During a goodwill message by Justice Darius Khobo, who is the Chairman of the Kaduna Justice Sector Coordination Group, urged the people of the state to give their support to the centre.

Mrs Hadiza Muazu, the Chairman of the Interim Management Committee (IMC) Jaba local government, praised the efforts of the state government and advised the people to avail themselves with the centre’s services.

The centre’s Manager, Mrs Grace Yohana, made an appeal to victims to immediately report cases and allow justice to take its course.

She also went on to advise victims not to hold back, by coming forward to be given treatment and counselling, which would help them to recover quickly.
