JUST IN: NLC commences Nationwide Protest

On Monday, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) announced it was commencing a nationwide protest over the leadership tussle at the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) board.

Both the union and the labour ministry have given support to different people for the chairmanship of the board of NSITF.

Yesterday, the Presidency made it known that the decisions of Chris Ngige, the minister of labour and productivity, on the current matter had the approval of President Muhammadu Buhari. It stated that the board will be inaugurated on Monday.

It has also redeployed Frank Kokori, the labour campaigner, to the the labour institute in Kwara State. Before now Mr Kokori was appointed by the president to lead the board at NSITF, but the minister has opposed his nomination while the NLC support him.

Last week, some Member of the NLC alongside some journalists were attacked by thugs who are believed to have been sent by Mr Ngige, during a protest at the minister’s residence in Asokoro, Abuja.

The nationwide protest which began as early as 9:00am on Monday, started from the Labour house.

The unions are protesting due to the unwillingness of the minister to inaugurate of Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) board.

Ayuba Wabba, the national president of NLC, while speaking at the protest, stated that the union are also protesting the attack on Nigerian workers during a protest to his house.

“On the 18th of June, Members of International Labour Congress in Geneva will be protesting against Ngige,” he stated.
