Incite Violence, Be Held To Account
The United States of America ( USA) has warned that anyone who tries to incite violence or meddle unduly in Nigeria’s general elections coming up in less than a week from now would be held accountable .
United States secretary of state,Michael Pompey gave the warning on Thursday.
In a statement released by the US state department, Pompeysaid the elections are Nigeria’s opportunity to solidify its place as the democratic leader in Africa.
Pompey also warned the that the nation’s electoral body must remain an impartial arbiter and there should be no interference with its operations.
Similarly,he warned that the nation’s security agencies must guarantee the safety of all Nigerians
“The United States government supports a free, fair, transparent, and peaceful election that reflects the will of the Nigerian people,” Pompey said.
“It is critical that the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) operates free from outside pressure and intimidation and in a totally objective manner.
“Nigerian security services must provide a safe and secure environment for the Nigerian people to exercise their rights. Those who interfere in the electoral process or incite violence must be held to account.
“The upcoming elections are an opportunity for Nigeria to solidify its place as a democratic leader in Africa.”
This statement is coming on the heels of a statement by Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El Rufai ,that foreigners who intervene in Nigeria’s election would go back in body-bags
