INAUGURATION: Kaduna State approves 6-month maternity leave for Lactating Mothers

On Wednesday, the government of Kaduna State disclosed that it has approved the period of 6-months maternity leave for lactating mothers in the state.

The Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, stated this during his inauguration ceremony which was held at the state capital for his second term in office.

According to the governor, the decision was reached on Tuesday so as to encourage the six months exclusive breastfeeding recommended by the Federal Ministry of Health, World Bank and also other medical experts.

“Children who are also up to the age of five will be given free medical care in our hospitals so that they are entitled to free regular medical check-ups in all public hospitals. Please this advantage should be taken seriously. Take your children to the hospital for regular checks from time to time.”

Our country, Nigeria is a signatory to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations targeted to achieve set goals, especially reducing infant mortality and maternal mortality significantly by 2030.

Take for example in Nigeria, according to the recent World Health Statistics, under-five mortality is pegged at 100.2 per 1, 000 live births, far from recommended reduction to 25 per 1000 live births.

The governor further emphasized that the medical service is free in all public hospitals within the state.

He assured all residents of continuous investment to the state and also the important need to create jobs to tackle the issue of unemployment, which in turn increases the revenue.
