How I dealt with godfathers in Kaduna – El-Rufai

The Executive Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, have advised the people of Lagos State on how to tackle godfatherism in the state.

The governor gave the advice while answering a question asked on godfatherism, at an event which was organized by the Bridge Club tagged: ‘An Evening with His Excellency Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, Governor of Kaduna State’, which held in Lagos on Sunday.

He said to achieve this, it would take early preparation and study.

He said: “Kaduna State used to be just like that. There were about four top politicians that you would need their support before you can become anything in the state.

“Those persons are the godfathers of the Politics in Kaduna State and you’ll have to carry them along on anything, which means paying them regularly also. But we dictated our own path, and after this election in 2019, we have retired all of them; we just had to.

Right here in Lagos State, there are more than 6 million registered voters; but only about a million voted (in 2019 general election); five million did not vote. If I have the intention to contest for Governor of Lagos, I will begin now.

“I will carry out a study why those five million registered voters did not vote; where do they go on the day of election? Then I will begin to pay them a visit for the next four years. I will do my best to see to it that 2 million of them come out to vote for me; with that I will defeat any godfather. The ultimate key is to connect with the people directly.

“This is no simple work at all, it requires three to four years of hard work. So, if you want to run in 2023, you should start now. So many of these godfathers are either on paper or in the mind of people in politics. They can be defeated.”

The governor also complained about the quality of leaders the country has, stating that Nigerian leaders are the least qualified with questionable qualifications.
