2019: El-Rufai, Ashiru, other Governorship Candidates Sign Peace Accord In Kaduna

In Kaduna State, candidates of different political parties came together to sign a peace accord ahead of the fast approaching general elections.

All the aspirants in the state came gathered together at the headquarters of the Kaduna State Police Command on Tuesday to sign an agreement to conduct themselves peacefully before, during and after the polls.

Nasir El-Rufai, the governor of the state, who is seeking to be re-elected for second term under the APC, and Isah Ashiru of the PDP were among the 26 of the 39 governorship candidates who were in attendance of the signing ceremony.

Before the accord was duly signed, some representatives of other political parties raised concerns on the sincerity and commitment of some candidates to respect the agreement.

Mr Ahmad Abdulrahman, who is the Commissioner of Police in Kaduna, while giving his address made emphasis for the need of all the candidates involved to properly conduct themselves in a peaceful and orderly manner.

According to the commissioner, this will help lead to a credible and acceptable electoral process.

He urged all the candidates to embrace peace, also have respect for one another before, during and after the elections.

The Police commissioner made it clear that the command is committed to ensuring an electoral environment free of intimidation, advising the candidates to play by the rules having it at the back of their minds that there’ll be winners and losers in every contest.

Some of the candidates spoke to newsmen after the event, promising to respect the peace agreement.

They also requested that the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct a free, fair and credible election.
