COVID-19: President Buhari extends Kano lockdown by two weeks

President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has extended the lockdown in Kano State by two weeks to help slow down the spread of COVID-19 in the state.

Boss Mustapha, who is the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), made this known during a briefing on Monday.

Mr Mustapha also made it known that the current movement restrictions in the nation will be extended by two weeks.

“Due to the recommendations of the PTF, President Buhari has made approval of the following:

“The measures, exemptions, advisories and scope of entities allowed to reopen under phase one of the eased locked down, shall be maintained across the federation for another two weeks effective from 12 00 midnight today (18th May, 2020 to 1st June, 2020);

“The lockdown in Kano should be extended for another two weeks,” he stated.

Earlier, the Kano State Government had made an announcement that it had extended the lockdown in the state by one week.

While Lagos State remains the epicentre of COVID-19 in Nigeria, cases in Kano have continued to increase.

As of Sunday evening, Kano accounts for 825 of the 5959 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the country.
