COVID-19 LOCKDOWN: 30 footballers arrested in Kano

On Tuesday, the Kano State Police Command stated that it had made some arrests of 30 youth who were involved in a football match in defiance with the lockdown order that was imposed in the state so to stop the wide spread of the Coronavirus.

Abdullahi Haruna, who is the Commands’ spokesman, made this known during an interview with our source, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano.

On April 14, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje had placed a total lock down of the state for seven days, starting from April 16, as part of urgent measures to stop the wide spread of the Coronavirus pandemic.

A video that went viral on social media platforms on Monday, however, showed hundreds of enthusiastic soccer fans watching a football match in an undisclosed location in Kano metropolis, in defiance to the social distancing and lockdown order.

Many youths in the state were seen playing football at different locations since the lockdown commenced from the past seven days.

The Police spokesman made it known that the suspects were all arrested after being identified as playing a football match in violation of the lockdown and social distancing regulation.

He stated that the suspects were arrested on Monday, at about 5 p.m. after they played a football match in Dala Local Government Area of the state.

“They were arrested for clearly defying the lockdown order and playing a football match at Dala LGA in Kano metropolis.”
