After four years, Kaduna court frees 91 detained Shiites

A total of 91 members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) has been discharged and acquitted by a Kaduna State High Court.

Hajaratu Gwada, who is the presiding judge, acquitted the defendants of the charges filed against them by the Kaduna state government in her judgement delivered on Friday.

The member of the group who were freed, were arrested during a clash with soldiers in Zaria, back in December 2015.

They were all brought forward and arraigned on five counts of criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, culpable homicide, disturbance of public peace, and causing grievous hurt.

It was stressed that the Kaduna State Government has not been able to fully prove its allegations against them beyond a reasonable doubt.

Justice Gwada, while giving her judgement, struck out all the charges filed against the IMN members and acquitted them.

She held that the decision reached was due to the failure of the prosecutor to prove the allegations levelled against the defendants beyond a reasonable doubt.
