Afforestation: Nigeria to plant 30 million trees in 2020

Tiamiyu Oladele, who is the Acting Director, Department of Forestry, Federal Ministry of Environment, has stated that there are plans by the Federal Government of Nigeria to plant 30 million tree seedlings in 2020 to accelerate afforestation in the country.

The Director made this known during an interview on Monday in Abuja with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He stated that President Buhar had made a promise to plant not less than 35 million trees and there were ongoing programmes to that effect.

Mr Oladele explained that the department has adopted practical measures to achieve planting at least 30 million tree seedlings this year.

We are currently expecting 30 million seedlings to be planted in the current year, some of the seedlings will be issued to farmers to establish plantations and some to be used as enrichment planting in our reserves.

“The seedlings will also be made available this year to every Nigerian at locations close to them to plant,” he stated.

“We are doing our best to make sure that we plant more trees but the rate of deforestation is faster than the rate of planting,” he said.

“Those who carry out activities of deforestation are not planting back, most especially the wood exporters, loggers and charcoal association. They are the ones cutting trees.

“We are currently doing all it takes to bring them to a round table to see how they can be part of re-afforestation.
