2019 Elections: I wont resign from my position – INEC Chairman

Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has made it clear that he has absolutely no reason to resign from office.

The Commission’s Chairman stated this during a press briefing on Thursday in Abuja.

“I am not under any pressure whatsoever. Will I leave my office? I see no reason to even nurse the thoughts to resign. There is absolutely no reason. INEC would do the job it has been assigned to carry out.

Since last week election was rescheduled, some Nigerians have urged the chairman to quit.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), rescheduled the general elections for presidential and National Assembly elections from February 16 to 23 and governorship and House of Assembly elections from March 2 to 9 due to issues that has to do with logistics.

President Muhammadu Buhari has made it known that he will act on INEC’s controversial action after the polls have been concluded.

Many condemnations has faced the president’s planned investigation, which implies that he has already concluded he will win the polls to be able to question the INEC chairman.

Some criticisms also followed the government this week after the State Security Service summoned top officials of the electoral body due to the postponement.

The SSS withdrew the summons after the government was accused of intimidating the top electoral officials.
